Small businesses face barriers in the UK to prevent them being "as green as they want to be".

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has spoken of two "overwhelming" factors that restrict the green capabilities of small firms in the UK. It said that there was a lack of information and difficulties with implementation.

Andrew Cave, senior spokesperson for the FSB, said: "We hear a lot about government initiatives and a lot of regulation linked to environmental issues but it is not often communicated to small businesses in a way that makes it easy for them to understand."

He also explained how it can be difficult for small businesses to do something as simple as recycling paper if local authorities do not provide appropriate facilities for them to do it.

Mr Cave advised firms to "get in touch with your local authority and find out exactly what it is you need to do" before implementing a new green policy.

A recent survey by the FSB showed that 83 per cent of small businesses were already engaged in waste minimisation and recycling.
