Growth in the information and technology industry is having an increasing impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, a new study says.

Around one billion computers currently exist on the planet - and they are responsible for around two per cent of all man-made CO2 emissions annually.

This is the same amount as produced by the global airline industry.

Environmental campaign group Global Action Plan says in its new report An Inefficient Truth that its time regulators woke up to the effect the IT industry is having on the environment.

It claims that the government should introduce new laws to make sure that the companies implement green purchasing strategies when it comes to bringing in new IT equipment and buying the latest technologies.

With an estimated ten million office PCs in the UK, around 43 per cent of the UK's adult population uses one on a regular basis.
