Consumers keen on green companies
Consumers are paying more attention than ever to the green credentials of the firms they shop with.
That is the message from a new survey by Virgin Money which indicates that one in five UK shoppers checks the environmental impact of their purchase before buying.
A sizeable minority - 8.2 million people, or 20 per cent - say they almost always take into account how eco-friendly a product is.
Virgin Money spokesman Jason Wyer-Smith commented: "Everyone is becoming more environmentally aware and that is beginning to have an impact on peoples purchasing decisions.
"We believe companies can be more successful by being greener."
Tesco came out top of those companies listed as the most eco-friendly, with 22 per cent of people putting it at number one. Second was Virgin Atlantic on 16 per cent, while HSBC, BT and Toyota made up the top five.
Mr Wyer-Smith said it was "obviously important to consumers to have a sense of whether a company is trying to improve its environmental impact or not".
