Microsoft has launched a new environmental channel on its MSN portal, which offers resources on green issues.

The MSN eco-site will feature news on the whole range of issues relating to the environment with news, videos, eco-friendly tips and features.

A special feature on the site is a calculator which concerned users can use to view their carbon impact and water usage.

There is also a maps page which uses both 2D and 3D images to highlight areas of the planet most affected by global warming, animal extinction and pollution.

Peter Bale, executive producer for Microsoft UK, said: "People are becoming increasingly concerned about the environment and are looking for ways they can help out and become part of the solution rather than the problem."

As part of Microsoft's sustainable computing programme it has announced its support for four academic research projects focused on energy efficiency in computing in the areas of data centre power efficiency and power management.
